Rubbish & Recycling
Important Warning
- As tenants of the property, it is your responsibility alone to place your rubbish, waste and recycling in the correct bins (as provided by Manchester City Council)
- place these bins out on the street on the evening before your bin collection date. Once collected, the bins need to be moved back, as you may be fined by the council for leaving them out on the street.
- To find out what your bin collection date is, please see this Bin Collection Date page on the Manchester City Council's website.
If the above steps aren't followed, you are liable to be fined by the Council, or charged by the landlord if they have to contract someone to come and tidy up!

What do the bin colours mean?
In general...
Blue Bins are for recycling paper and cardboard
Brown Bins are for recycling bottle-shaped plastics and glass, and tins
Green Bins are for recycling food and organic waste
Grey/black bins are used for general rubbish and waste, and anything that doesn't go in the other 3 recycling bins
- The council will not collect your recycling bins if they contain the wrong materials, this includes plastic bags that contain recycling materials - please just empty the bag and re-use the carrier bag
- For guidance on which recycling bins to use for what material, please see this page on the council's website.
- If you do not look after your own bins and ensure that the bins are collected properly, then you might be fined by the council
What goes where?
Check out this great website that tells you what you can do with any item, and what bins they go in!
If you need to get rid of any large unwanted items, the city council can also help with that. Please see this Large Unwanted Items page for more information.
The council also provides information and advice about:
- Reporting a problem with your bin collection
- Missing or damaged bins
- Requesting a new bin, box or recycling bag
