Setting Up Bills, Council Tax, and TV Licence
If your tenancy comes with bills included, you do not need to take any further action, but please ensure you are registered to pay council tax (or exemption if applicable) and set up your TV Licence (optional). Further information can be found further down the page.
Utility Bills
You should have received a move-in inventory within seven days of the first set of keys being released. This report will contain the initial meter readings, which we have taken before the start of your tenancy. Electricity, water, and gas will already be up and running upon your move in.
We do not keep a record of the suppliers used by the previous tenants but you do not need to use the same suppliers as they did. If you would prefer to, there may be previous post addressed to them with the company logo to indicate who they were signed with.
Please contact the supplier you have chosen and register with them as per their company requirements. You will then need to enter the initial meter readings and they will charge you from that reading going forward until the end of your tenancy.
Please note that your liability for energy bills begins from the start date on your Tenancy Agreement, regardless of when you collect keys and/or physically move into the property
Recommendation: Go to an energy comparison site to make sure you're getting good rates on your electricity and keeping your bills as cheap as possible! This page from Money Saving Expert on the topic is worth your time to read.
Water
Your water supply is provided by United Utilities, so please contact them to inform them about a change in address.
If they mention that you don't have a water meter, then you will pay a standard charge for your water. See United Utilities' page on understanding your bill for more details!
Internet
Unless you're under a Bills Inclusive tenancy, you'll need to arrange with an internet service provider to supply your property with internet.
Any broadband provider that is able to supply your flat should already have the required sockets/access points installed, but please check with us first if they say that they need to drill any holes in the building!
Make sure you get the best deal possible, we recommend you have a look at the guides here from Money Saving Expert to find out more about what you might need, and where to get a fair price for it.
Council Tax
If you are a full-time student, you do not need to pay council tax, however, you must register your status as a student with the local council, otherwise, they are still liable to charge you. If you are a single tenant, or your household has a mixture of students and working professionals, you may be eligible for a discount.
Please refer to the Manchester City Council website for further details.
TV Licence
Paying for a TV Licence is optional and only required if you plan on watching TV live or anything on iPlayer, but if you would like to do this, you can find more information on the TV Licensing website.
The law says you need to be covered by a TV Licence to:
- watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV, on any channel
- watch or stream programmes live on an online TV service (such as ITV Hub, All 4, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Now TV, Sky Go, etc.)
- download or watch any BBC programmes on iPlayer.
